Most women will enter menopause (cessation of the menstrual cycle) sometime between the ages of 45 to 55. The average age is 51, and with the life expectancy for women falling between ages 75 and 80, most women can look forward to 30 or more postmenopausal years. During menopause, however, hormone levels can fluctuate causing symptoms such as:
There is a great deal of conflicting information in the media about menopause and hormone replacement therapy (HRT). Do the benefits of HRT outweigh the risks? How long should a woman be on HRT? These are questions that can be answered only after careful consideration of an individual woman’s health, family history, lifestyle, and the physical and emotional changes she experiences. Some symptoms of menopause can amount to short-term annoyances, while others persist or have a longer-term impact on a woman’s health.
In conjunction with your physician, our pharmacists can help you assess the risks and benefits of traditional HRT as well as bioidentical (natural) hormone replacement therapy (BHRT).
BHRT balances your body’s natural hormones levels by replacing depleted hormones with natural hormones derived from plant-based sources, including wild yam or soy. These hormones are friendly to your body’s organs, such as the heart, bones and brain.
Bioidentical hormones have the same molecular structure as your body’s own natural hormones. Synthetic hormones, on the other hand, are made from chemically altered animal sources that often cause many side effects because the body does not fully recognize them. Many women are unable to tolerate the side effects of these synthetic hormones, while others are now recognizing that they have been putting themselves at risk by using these mass-produced products.
Can BHRT reduce the symptoms of menopause?
Nearly all women enjoy relief from uncomfortable menopausal symptoms with BHRT. Women who are still cycling, but have symptoms of menopause will regain balance in their lives with the use of these products. For your convenience, we offer simple testing kits at our South National facility to determine your optimal hormone levels.
As with any drugs, there are possible risks and side effects. To discuss these issues, talk to your pharmacist, or call if you have any questions.
What are the common components of BHRT?
Depending upon your individual needs, BHRT may include these components:
