WHAT IS COMPOUNDING?

Compounding is the art and science of customizing prescription drugs (prescribed by the patient’s doctor) to meet individual needs. Until the late 1950’s, compounding was practiced at every pharmacy in the U.S.; however, when commercial wholesale drug companies began manufacturing packaged drugs in large quantities, pharmacy compounding fell out of favor, and pharmacists began dispensing mass-produced medications to patients.  Since the 1990’s, the practice of pharmacy compounding has experienced renewed popularity as doctors have looked to compounding to provide customized drugs for their patients.

DO COMPOUNDING PHARMACISTS UNDERGO SPECIAL TRAINING?

Compounding pharmacists are specially trained in the art of compounding as members of PCCA (Professional Compounding Centers of America). Compounded medications often require equipment and chemicals that are not available in most pharmacies. Our staff is trained to use this state-of-the-art equipment, and they continually work to keep up with the latest advances in compounding techniques. Currently, there are only a few compounding pharmacists in Springfield and Grove Pharmacy offers you the experience of these exceptional professionals.
